What's a wiki?
Wiki is a Hawaiian word for quick. A wiki is an online webpage, that can be edited quickly, right inside the web browser.

How do you use it? This wiki is shared by everyone in our classroom. It means that each student has the privilege and responsibility to create and add to this site.

Are there any "wiki" codes or "shortcuts" that make editing easier? There are quite a few actually. After you click on the "Edit this Content" icon on the left of this screen, a an EasyEdit Toolbar will appear. It will allow you to format text, create hyperlinks, add images, spell check, and center or bullet key ideas. Try it out!

For the last several weeks we have been using the Internet
for a variety of purposes including:
  1. Completing projects (human body systems, biography, and much more)!
  2. Reading and posting to a class blog (Idea Exchange).
  3. Formatting and posting to individual blogs (Mission Students).
  4. Posting comments on each of these blog sites to share opinions, share sites, and share our work.
  5. Bookmarking useful sites in our browser's bookmarks menu and on our blogs' blogroll.
  6. Doing image searches to spice up our projects and make them cool.
  7. Locating videos that help you to learn things (Ed1Stop).
  8. Communicating using email (with ePALS).
  9. Uploading and editing documents online (Google docs & spreadsheets).
  10. Completing information challenges (such as the California Velco Crop & Burmese Mountain Dog ).
  11. How to do effective searches using a search engine (Google & Advanced Search)
  12. WhatDiscussing what to look for on websites to figure out the authors' bias, point of view, and motives.
  13. Customizing our desktops and blog sites with cool graphics and backgrounds.
  14. MORE?Sharing Addour persuasive writing essays (assigned and free choice topics).
  15. Creating a Flat YOU story (based on here.Flat Stanley).

Below is a list of Internet strategies that we have reported learning.

Short-cuts
  • Use the top right hand search box on any webpage for a quick search (use pulldown menu to change search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask and More!)
  • Copy (Control C) and paste (Control V)
  • Bookmark this page ( Control D)
  • Undo ( Control Z )
  • Control T - opens new tab in browser window so you can tab between sites.
  • How to use the "history" menu to go back to sites previously visited.
  • Control - W to open a new window.
  • Control + to make the text on a webpage bigger.
  • Option C to open a file
  • Control Shift W to close a window
  • To Save Page as Control S
  • To open an online keyboard
  • Look at the right click menu for copy/paste/delete and other shortcuts.
  • Use the arrow keys between the forward and back button to get back to sites you were on before.

Formatting
  • Changing the background on your blog.
  • Changing the font, size and color of text in a Word document and on a blog post
  • Adding images to Word documents & Powerpoints.
  • How to bold, center, and italics using short cuts.

Searching
  • If you know the title of the site, or who made the site, do a search with that information.
  • Using + between search terms to get both.
  • Image searches to locate pictures as backgrounds for computer desktop, for reports, and for powerpoint presentations.
  • Using the "search within a site" feature to locate certain word. They're highlighted and you can go to that part.
  • Using the "edit" "find" feature on any webpage to locate certain words or phrases.
  • Using quotes in a search engine to locate sites with certain phrases. Quotes keep the whole phrase together. (or use advanced search box with the exact phrase)
  • Use key words when searching, not whole questions.
  • The more key words you use to search, the more specific the results get.
  • If you use too many key words, you won't find enough sites.
  • There are many different search engines.
  • How to look at the number of hits and narrow the hits down to be more specific.
  • Reading the results carefully to pick the best kind of site to look at.
  • Do another search when your first search wasn't that good
  • Use synonyms or words that mean the same thing to do better searches.
  • Search for something first to know the words you need to use to do a better search.

Critically Evaluating
  • Look for the author(s) of the site on the bottom or side menu of the site.
  • Visit about us, or something that means the same thing.
  • Look at who sponsors the site.
  • Read the website address to see who made the site.
  • Usually the person/company/organization who made it is the middle of the address
  • Look at the end of the address to see what kind of place made the site (.org or .edu or .com)
  • Google search the author of the site to learn more about him/her.
  • Google the site name to see if it appears on a list of hoax/bogus sites.
  • Read the site carefully to see if they're trying to sell you something.
  • Beware of ads and sponsors who want you to think a certain way.

Communicating
  • Posting information on blogs to share opinions.
  • Creating and deleting posts.
  • Downloading word documents from the blog to your desktop.
  • Commenting on what others have posted on blogs.
  • Adding images to blogs to enhance the blog's appearance
  • Sending an email using ePALS (compose)
  • Attaching a word document to an email message.
  • Opening and reading email messages.
  • Downloading an attachment sent by email.
  • Email people you know, beware of strangers.
  • Participating in a Google Groups forum.

File Storage
  • Saving and retrieving documents from the computer's "my documents" folder
  • Exchanging files and/or moving files from computer to computer using a portable flash drive.
  • Posting documents on Google docs & spreadsheets
    • loging in
    • uploading
    • creating a new document
    • editing a document that has been uploaded
    • formatting google docs using the menu

Collecting Facts and Ideas from Multiple Sites and Putting them all together
  • Look at more than one site to see how the information compares.

Reading information on a webpage
  • Preview each web page, scroll all the way to the bottom.
  • Examine the links on the page so you get a good sense of what's there.
  • Look and see how many ads are on the page and stay away from pages that look like they're trying to sell you stuff.
  • Use "edit" "find" to get to the part of the site that's most useful.
  • Look at the sitemap if the site has a link like that.
